CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

David Kaminsky muttered something under his breath as he quickly jumped to his feet and hurriedly tucked in his shirttails. “Ms. Yavar,” he said softly with his head bowed and without making eye contact, “this is a great honor.”

Master Rōshi nodded his approval as he whispered in Olivia’s ear. “You may want to take notes on the proper way to greet a member of the High Council.”

“If I ever acted like that around the Princess of the Ganges you would think I was an imposter and you’d likely kill me where I stood.”

Rōshi thought about it for a moment then nodded his agreement. “Quite possibly.”

Kharmista Yavar walked past Kaminsky without bothering to acknowledge his presence and took a position in front of Michael Charon. “Do you agree with the valuation this man has placed on this information, Chief Enforcer?” she asked.

Charon sighed. “A lot will depend on how quickly we can break the code, Ms. Yavar. Once the Trust realizes we’re close they will take defensive measures which will greatly diminish its value.”

Kharmista glanced at Kaminsky as if she had just noticed he was in the room. “Since he is under our control, can you extract this information without any payment?”

“Look,” Kaminsky said cheerfully, “a billion dollars was just a starting point in the negotiation and….” Kaminsky’s mouth fell open and his eyes grew wide as Master Rōshi clamped his powerful right hand at the junction of Kaminsky’s neck and shoulder and squeezed a pressure point. As the old man increased the pressure, Kaminsky slowly sank to his knees.

“Yes,” Charon answered as he watched tears starting to stream from Kaminsky’s eyes. “Bruno Lazio is already in the building so it wouldn’t take very long.”

“Excellent, Chief Enforcer,” Kharmista said as she turned on her heels and headed toward the door. “Make it so.”

“Wait!” Kaminsky shouted above the pain. Rōshi squeezed harder, dropping Kaminsky to all fours. Kharmista nodded for Rōshi to release the younger man. Kaminsky winced and said, “How about I give you everything I have and we let you tell me what it is worth after we see the results?”

Kharmista looked in the direction of Charon for his opinion. He shrugged and said, “It may save us some time.”

“Very well,” Kharmista said as her eyes locked on Kaminsky. “If he gives you the slightest reason to doubt him,” her voice turned to granite, “extract the information then kill him.”

“Yes, ma’am,” Charon said to Kharmista’s back as she left the room.

“Ms. Yavar!” Rōshi shouted hopefully. “You know the pleasure I get from killing members of the Trust.”

“I don’t care who kills him Master Rōshi,” Kharmista said dismissively with a wave of her hand without looking back. “You two work it out.” She disappeared through the doorway.

Rōshi and Olivia helped Kaminsky to his feet and stood him in front of Michael Charon. “You heard the lady,” Charon said. “Do we understand each other?”

“Absolutely,” Kaminsky said he rubbed his neck and eyed the man helping him up. “You’re Master Rōshi Dorje?”

Rōshi grunted.
